Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) have great impact on health of the individual and community. They can cause genital infection, infertility, abortion, still birth, pneumonia, neo natal death and are associated with cervical cancer; death during and after child birth, birth defects, impaired vision, blindness; shortened life span and death especially in AIDS. The study and knowledge of STD is essential for improving the health of the community. This book was conceived keeping these aspects in view and an effort was made to address all aspects. STDs are more dynamic than other infections and their prevalence and clinical profile varies especially in developing countries like India where syphilis, chancroid and donovanosis are prevalent. However, the picture is undergoing change at fast pace and bacterial STDs are becoming less common and viral STDs are increasing. The advent of AIDS has caused a sea change in the attitude of all concerned. Hitherto the STDs were trivial nuisance and now with arrival of AIDS they have become a matter of National concern. We have accorded high priority to AIDS and STD prevalence in developing countries in this book. STDs have a special impact on women and children and this subject has been extensively covered. Prevention is the only remedy available for viral STD infections. Special chapters on sexual behaviour and condom usage to prevent STDs have been included. The NACO is making unprecedented efforts in control of STD and implementing syndromic approach which has also been incorporated in this book. The book is meant for post-graduates in Dermatology and Venereology and general practitioners interested in treating STD / HIV / AIDS. The book has not only included International guidelines for treatment recommended by CDC and WHO but also NACO guidelines.
The book also includes an Atlas on STD & AIDS along with flow charts for treating genital ulcer disease, urethral and vaginal discharge.
